Department of Graphics/Printmaking
The Graphics Department is an integral part of the BFA curriculum, focusing on the art of printmaking as a medium of both technical precision and creative exploration. It enables students to understand image reproduction, composition, line, tone, and texture while developing a strong foundation in both traditional and contemporary practices. Through systematic training and experimentation, students cultivate discipline, craftsmanship, and conceptual thinking, essential for building a professional career in printmaking and related visual arts.
The curriculum includes traditional printmaking techniques such as relief printing (woodcut and linocut), intaglio (etching, engraving, aquatint), lithography, and screen printing; modern and contemporary practices like monotype, digital printmaking, and collagraph; as well as experimental approaches including alternative processes (solar plate, polygravure), pulp printing, and print-based installation and mixed media practices.
The inclusion of these diverse mediums allows students to explore a wide range of techniques and material possibilities while enhancing their technical versatility and creative expression. It encourages innovation, adaptability, and critical engagement with both traditional craftsmanship and evolving technologies. This comprehensive exposure equips students with the skills required for careers in fine art printmaking, illustration, design, publishing, and interdisciplinary art practices.
By integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary experimentation, the Graphics Department nurtures skilled, imaginative, and versatile artists, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the evolving field of printmaking and visual culture.
