Department of Sculpture
The Sculpture Department plays a vital role in the BFA curriculum by enabling students to explore three-dimensional expression, material sensitivity, and spatial understanding. Through hands-on engagement with diverse materials, students develop technical proficiency, conceptual clarity, and creative innovation. Exposure to multiple mediums not only strengthens craftsmanship but also broadens artistic vision, allowing students to respond to both traditional practices and contemporary art forms.
The curriculum includes traditional mediums such as clay, wood, stone, and metal; modern and contemporary materials like plaster, resin, fiberglass, and concrete; as well as mixed media and experimental practices incorporating found objects (assemblage), glass, wax, textiles, and paper. The inclusion of these varied mediums is essential as it allows students to understand the distinct properties, possibilities, and limitations of each material. It encourages adaptability and experimentation, helping learners discover their individual artistic language while also building confidence in handling different techniques and processes. Exposure to such diversity fosters innovation, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation of how material choice influences both form and meaning in sculptural practice.
Working across varied mediums equips students with a comprehensive understanding of material possibilities and artistic processes. The Sculpture Department thus nurtures creativity, adaptability, and technical excellence, shaping students into versatile and innovative artists.
